The Salt Lake Valley Metro Fire Agency was formed in 2006 when the eight member cities - Bluffdale, Midvale, Murray, Sandy, South Jordan, South Salt Lake, West Jordan, and West Valley - signed an interlocal agreement that provided for sharing of resources and equipment.

The Metro Fire Agency provides service through twenty-five fire stations and one satellite fire station by five hundred firefighters to 420,000 citizens. The agency has eight battalions that provide service with seventeen engine companies eight truck companies - five ladders and three towers - eleven brush units, twenty ALS ambulances, two ALS squads, two BLS squads, four heavy rescue units, five water rescue units, seven Hazardous Materials companies, three breathing air and light utilities, and a Rehab Unit. The agency also provides support for special events including ALS bicycle EMS and limited access ambulances.
